Dateline: Portland, Maine. In boxing news, Margie Dunson, a former women's champion boxer during the 1970's, was arrested and faces up to 20 years in prison for assaulting a friend during last year's Super Bowl game. Dunson, who made boxing news when she rose from obscurity to become one of the top women's boxers of the 70's. According to an Associated Press article published in the Boston Globe, Dunson stabbed her friend John Jackson during a drunken argument while watching the Super Bowl at Dunson's home in South Portland. After her heyday as a pro boxer, Dunson allegedly struggled with booze and drugs for years, but finally settled in Maine, buying a house and raising a daughter. Dunson's arrest is a sad story, but unfortunately not unknown in boxing news circles. There has been many a washed-up former boxer from Sonny Liston right on up to Mike Tyson who has made the boxing news for all the wrong reasons. Whatever happens, I wish Margie Dunson luck and hope that she straightens her life out before it's too late.
