I was reading some boxing news on USA Today and came across an article about two boxers from Cuba that were banned from fighting by the insane Fidel Castro. The story goes that during the Pan American Games, Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandy Lara took off until they were later arrested for disserting their communist country. They were found to be applying for German visas; at least that was what a German fight promoter said. The two fighters obviously denied those allegations but Castro barred them from fighting for their desertion.
Rigondeaux has won two Olympic gold medals and Lara was the 2005 amateur welterweight world champ according to boxing news. Teofilo Stevenson who is the VP of the Cuban Boxing Federation wants both fighters to be reinstated. I agree. It is understandable why they would want to leave their country but according to them they were not deserting. Either way they are two of the better fighters that Cuba has. In recent boxing news, Castro stop fighters from competing in the World Championships in Chicago because of fear of desertion. Casrto needs to die or lose power.
